The great British TV switch off panic – Costa Blanca & Calida

Many based on the Costas are currently worrying a little about changes due to satellite reception.

Presently we are receiving the main UK terrestrials off Astra 1N. This was a temporary replacement for 2D which failed earlier than it should have done for its scheduled replacement Astra 2F.

Astra 2F is currently testing and many believe it will come into operation on the 15th of November (though they may keep Astra 1N operational for a while longer).

Many are concerned over the ‘spot beam’ which is focused over the UK. This is no different to previously in Spain – we have always been on the fringes of reception – however there are changes afoot and this is likely to affect reception of the main UK terrestrials. Other channels such as Sky are on a different satellite (Eutelsat 28A) & presently there are no changes due to this.

Whilst on the surface of it, there are some concerns – many people have different dish sizes, so until the new transmissions start, no one will know for sure.

Local newspapers (or should that be advertising brochures?) have been publishing ‘scaremongering’ articles, telling everyone that they will no longer be able to get TV. This is simply incorrect. Firstly many are unaware that some of these papers have an affiliation with illegal rebroadcasters – so have their own agenda MONEY!

However – what they and many others have missed, is that you can presently pick up BBC / ITV off a different satellite, with a 1 meter dish! All you need is a little know how & the correct satellite receiver. Rest to follow on another blog later…..
