Cagneys

Heard they are maybe the next bar to go in these tough times NOT GOOD for them or the area maybe they can turn things around and ride it out to keep going to see the good times or there will be nothing left!!

La Marina

Cant be easy for any Bar or Restaurant at the moment,I would like to think Cagneys can keep going,Got to be one of the friendliest Bars on the Urb. but if not i wish Kate and Rickey plus staff the best of luck for the future.
At the end of the day it is us,the residents who are the losers, this place is definitely beginning to look a bit like the ghost is arriving in the town.

I hope its just a rumour. If people keep talking the areas down and would be buyers are reading these comments, would anyone consider buying?

Try to understand that these poeple are selling food so cheaply the profit is tiny. All the moaners want cheap cheap cheap! Bars are droping prices to entice people, and you are still NOT going and eating there! The bars need to raise their prices and people need to support them, otherwise your fears will come true, and you will have a ghost town on your doorstep! Not helping house prices here either! With Gagneys serving food so cheap and putting on entertainment, and you guys not going, its a matter of time! Dont know how they made it till now? Support the restuarants and bars
in you area, and stabalize your house price a little!

You are so right Marco!!! Quesada is alive. People go out and spend some money there! Most are Norwegiens, Dutch etc.. and the odd English can be found there. But they go out once a week for a meal/drink. Almost everyone can afford this? Valentines was alive in La marina and quesada, so there are enough people still here to prop up our local economy!!!

Cagney's is not closing down FACT ! they have had a few problems recently due to circumstances beyond their control through no fault of their own. Kate and Ricky are trying their best to overcome this problem and keep the bar going (most people would have thrown the towel in due to the problems they have been subjected to) They have also set up a facebook page to help promote their business, go to "cagneys la marina" on facebook and have a look!!!

Commented dragardian in Alicante 2013-02-20 06:47:35 UTC

Yes, it is hard for them to survive but, if the exchange rate goes down then people will still pay their bills and eat at home but, they won't go out so much. Not every pensioner has large pensions coming into the house as years ago women were not encouraged to pay a full stamp so when the exchange rates go down they are affected by this. If we lose about 70 euros a month on our pension then this affects our spending for that month. This in turn affects business' so when us pensioners mention that the exchange rate has gone down what we are saying is "We have not got as much money to spend in local business'" we are not necessarily complaining, just stating facts.

Good news for Cagney, they are defo not closing at this time anyway, we are off there tonight for food, a fun quiz and play your cards right.

Ricky is also starting a Friday afternoon sing-a-long session from this Friday 2pm - 4pm and they also have bingo (I think on a Tuesday evening)

They have also just recently made their own Facebook page.

The other factor is quality of meals. People don't mind paying for quality, but some establishments don't offer it........anyone can reheat Iceland food. And I am not naming names.
Instead of dropping prices....raise quality!

Commented Maz in La Marina 2013-02-20 16:29:58 UTC

You are right about the quality! In a pie you can put in shreads of poorer quality meats, and still get a nice tasting pie. However if you want a nice Steak, its has to be prime, otherwise you would send it back saying its too tough or full of fat! Good steaks CANNOT be brought for 5.95
as some places say! This is Crap meat, and tastes crap! A couple of bars have shut down because of this, and serves then right! Customers are NOT stupid! This is exactly what needs to be shreaded down and shared in about 5 pies, or dressed with bread crumbs or curries to hide the true flavour or its original cut (brain , foot , tail, ears!) Every part of the beast is used, and cleverly disguised!!! Customers do actually want quality if they are spending their money. Its true to say the good establishments are still open and doing OK?

Commented joe in La Marina 2013-02-20 19:25:11 UTC

You do not have to buy the most expensive cuts of meat. The way it is cooked makes the difference and what ever happened to "home made gravy". The gravy makes a world of difference to a Sunday roast.

Commented Caroline in La Marina 2013-02-20 20:34:59 UTC

It does indeed. Would you like it served over a ear, tail or foot?? If you have a reasonable cut of meat, it does make all the difference...without having to have top quality fillet!

Commented joe in La Marina 2013-02-20 21:48:25 UTC

Gosh, I sincerely hope people don't think that I reheat Iceland products here at Cagney's. When the bar is closed all day Monday I use the time to make my homemade curry, using the plumpest chicken breasts from Sue at La Marina Butchers, my homemade chilli, lasagne and bolognaise using a very lean mince that produces little fat in the pan and I buy what I consider to be the best ribeye steak in the area, which I cut myself. How else could I advertise homemade dishes if I were using Lidl's pre packed lasagne or Iceland curries!!!! The customers are not daft and would spot the difference a mile off.
Please note that our revamped menu will be out on the 1st March. Regretfully there will be some price increases as a result of 5 price increases by some of our suppliers in the last year plus the 5 percent IVA (VAT) increase in the space of 16 months. We buy a lot of English products as we are an English bar/kitchen and these incur additional costs such as overseas transport and the exchange rate. Its funny though that since the recent fall in the exchange rate the food prices haven't come down!!! We hope in light of all this our customers will still support us. Same food, same quality.
Thank you.
Kate and Ricky

I for one will live by any price increase for the sake of Quality, home cooked produce.
Keep up the good work wishing you both all the best, might be a good idea to put your new menu on facebook page.

Commented Weejohnten in La Marina 2013-02-21 15:17:10 UTC

That's the plan. Thank you.

Kate,I dont think anybody who has eaten at Cagneys would ever think the are eating anything except your fabulous home made meals, and long may you offer the wonderful meals that you do.The price increase is way overdue,.I have the terrible two back from England(they have already been in for breakfast today) and we are booked in for Sunday, for a great meal and the Beatles tribute (Hope Rickeys throat is better)and hope to pop in tomorrow for a couple of hours of decent music.
Keep going. We need places like Cagneys on this Urb

Commented Alan in La Marina 2013-02-21 15:35:27 UTC

Gagneys! I am sure none of these comments are directed at you! Prices are going up for raw materials. That has to passed to the customer, and customers that don't understand, don't eat out anyway! You have to do it to survive! If you dont raise your prices, the math won't add up!

Commented joe in La Marina 2013-02-21 16:13:24 UTC

I for one can say Cagney's don't do not Iceland re-heat crap. As today I had a lovely lasagna with se good fresh salad and coleslaw...
So yup, all freshly cooked and tasted good. So thank you Kate.

well said Alan, just what i was going to say, cagneys will survive because they do everything right

Commented Linda in La Marina 2013-02-21 20:11:14 UTC

Hope so, but it comes down to peoples spending power in these hard times cutting back on the amount they spend each time they go out and the amount of times they go out
