Just a word of caution
I understand that the Police have been stopping people down near at Lidl / Mercadona area and checking to make sure that residents are driving on a Spanish licence and a nice little fine if you are on a British licence.
I thought it was OK to use a British licence until it expired

Could be a problem if you are resident in more than one country due to the 90 day UK resident rules.
Maybe this is one that Jeff could help with ???

I suspect that a lot of people use their existing licence. Which makes this a possible problem. Can we please be updated???????

Driving Licences/Spanish Residents

Once you become a resident, you will be required to either present or exchange your current UK licence. Both involve a trip to Trafico in Alicante.

In the first instance, the licence will be inspected and stamped, or if you exchange your licence you will receive a new Spanish version. If you own a British or non-Spanish registered vehicle, you have six months in which to “import” and re-register the vehicle with Spanish number plates.

I found that on a European regulating site. It's the same for the UK if you move there and reside for more than 12 months you have to change your licence to a British one.

Having read up as much as i can find.Andi is correct in what he says.
Apparently at first a British License holder would be fined a higher amount due to the fact that points couldnt be taken off his license,then it was found that in lots of cases you would receive the fines by post,and in most cases the address on your license was where you used to live in G.B. so was undeliverable to the person who was fined,It was at this point the Spanish authorities decided to make sure you had an address to where the correct person received the penalty notice.
May be inconvenient,but does make sense.

Basically you can use you UK licence untill it expires, however does not help those of us who have properties and vehicles in more than one country / duel residents
